Itinerary

1

DAY 1: CONNECT TO DIBRUGARH

CHECK IN DAY

Catch a connecting flight to Dibrugarh where a Himalayan Heroes representative will greet you at the airport and transfer you to our hotel. A rider in the afternoon and some time to explore before we get on the bikes tomorrow.

2

DAY 2: TO THE HEAD HUNTERS

DIBRUGARH TO MON (130 km / 5-6 hours)

We leave the hustle and bustle of Dibrugarh and head south past the tea plantations and start to climb the mountains that creates a natural border with Myanmar. The road turns to dirt as we start to climb the twists and turns to the mountain top village. Our nostrils are filled with the smell of burning charcoal as we arrive in town in the late afternoon when people are warming their house and starting to cook dinner.

3

DAY 3: ON THE BORDER...LITERALLY

MON TO LONGWA TO MON (80 km / 5-6 hours)

After breakfast we jump on the bikes and head to Longwa village which sits right across two international borders, India and Myanmar. We’ll walk through the village and see the head hunter tribe, have lunch and see their traditions before heading back to Mon.

4

DAY 4: RIVER RUN

MON TO KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK (270 km / 8+ hours)

A long but scenic ride along the Brahmaputra River until we get to the national park. Home to two thirds of the world’s single horned rhinos and a tiger sanctuary, it is certainly a special place that we’ll explore the following morning.

5

DAY 5: HEAD TO THE MOUNTAINS

KAZARINGA TO BOMDILA (210 km / 6-7 hours)

We awake early to ensure we catch the animals at sunrise on our jeep safari. After breakfast, we head north into the eastern Himalayas. As we climb in altitude the traffic becomes sparse and the temperature drops. More importantly, the roads get twistier!

6

DAY 6: LARGEST MONASTERY

BOMDILA TO TAWANG (180 km / 6-7 hours)

With over 140 hairpin bends in the last 100kms of the day, it’s a tricky but incredibly rewarding day. If it’s cold then be wary of black ice on the shaded part of the road. Some of the best riding in all of the Himalayan heroes adventures.

Tawang has a fascinating history but came to the attention of the world when the current Dalai Lama sought asylum in 1959 and crossed the border from Tibet and stayed at the Tawang Monastery, the second largest Buddhist monastery in the world outside Tibet.

Tawang Monastery was founded due to the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso. It belongs to the Gelugpa sect and is the largest Buddhist monastery in India. It is a major holy site for Tibetan Buddhists as it was the birthplace of the sixth Dalai Lama.

7

DAY 7: HIDDEN PARADISE

TAWANG TO ZEMITHANG (90 km / 4 hours)

We head further north to Zemithang where the current Dalai Lama crossed into India. We’ll arrive just after lunch so will have plenty of time to ourselves to explore, rest or get to know the locals. It is a very remote place and incredibly peaceful but the main reason we travel there is because the roads are phenomenal as they twist down the mountain, giving you a new scene around every corner.

8

DAY 8: SELA PASS

ZEMITHANG TO DIRANG (205 km / 7-8 hours)

With a big day ahead of us, we take off early an head back through Tawang via a different route and then continue over Sela Pass (or maybe we’ll bypass it and take the new tunnel) on our way to Dirang. Although we’ve ridden on this road, you won’t recognise it as you’re seeing everything from the opposite perspective.

9

DAY 9: BACK OVER THE BORDER

DIRANG TO GUWAHATI (300 km / 9 hours)

By far, our longest day in the saddle so we have to start early so that we can pull into our final stop before the son goes down. The first two thirds of the day is spent on mountain roads with continuous corners coming at you relentlessly.  When we finally hit the lowlands, we veer west along the river towards our destination – Guwahati. A feast to celebrate an amazing adventure awaits, along with a well earned drink. For many, this day will be the highlight of the trip.

10

DAY 10: HOMEWARD BOUND

DEPART GUWAHATI TO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

If your flight is in the afternoon, we’ll visit Kamakhya Temple which was built in the 8th century. It is an important pilgrimage destination for Hindus and especially for Tantric worshipers.

We’ll take you to the airport at Guwahati to catch your connecting flight from Delhi or Kolkata to your hometown.

You’ve just completed one of our most culturally diverse adventures with a visit to the land of the Head Hunters on the border with Myanmar, riding some of the Himalayas best roads into the state of Arunchal Pradesh that was once part of Tibet, visited the museum in Tawang with artefacts over 1000 years old and then ridden trails back through the forests and dodged traffic as you arrive at the pilgrimage city of Guwahati. Every Himalayan Heroes adventure is designed so that each day is better than the previous and this trip does it better than most. Your head will be spinning with everything that you’ve seen and you’ll be longing for more mountain roads as soon as you get home.

Optional Extras

INSURANCE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES such as INDIA, NEPAL, BHUTAN, MONGOLIA, TIBET and PAKISTAN

In the countries we conduct adventures, commercial insurance on motor vehicles is either not available, or is of questionable value. 3rd party insurance will usually not cover foreigners and even if it does, it is generally worthless if one needs to make a claim. In the event of an accident in these countries, the situation is usually settled on the spot without the “assistance” of insurance companies. If insurance companies are involved, it can take days, weeks and even months before there is a resolution.

Damage Cap Option “DCO”

Himalayan Heroes offers its riders the option of capping the cost of your damage bill on the motorcycle you are riding. The cost of this damage cap option “DCO” is US$195, paid as a lump sum before the tour starts. In the event you damage the motorcycle, the DCO will cap your damage bill at US$200.

3 Scenarios

  1. If, like most of our riders, you do not damage the motorcycle then the total cost to you is only the cost of the DCO = US$195.
  2. If, like some of our riders, you put the bike down at slow speed and damage mirrors, levers, foot pegs etc and the damage bill is say, US$120 then you pay the US$120. The total cost to you is US$315 (US$195 DCO + US$120 damage bill)
  3. If you have a big off and damage the tank, forks etc and the damage bill is say US$750 then your damage bill is capped at US$200. The total cost to you is US$395 (US$195 DCO + US$200 damage bill).

The DCO is optional, so if you would like to carry the risk yourself, you are welcome to. At the completion of the tour, you will be presented with an itemised bill of the damage to the bike. Approximately 50% of our riders do not damage the bikes and of the 50% that do receive a damage bill, the majority of the bills are less than $300. Please send us an email if you’ve got any questions about the DCO.

The DCO is not an insurance policy and therefore any costs related to it cannot be claimed on a travel insurance claim.

Testimonials

Val Zanotto, NSW Australia (2018 Nepal - Stairway to Heaven)

There are many experiences in life but not many that take us completely out of our comfort zone. Himalayan Heroes did that effortlessly while injecting a lot of challenges and fun. At the end of each day i could proudly say "mission accomplished".

Jenny Douglas, USA (2018 Sikkim & Bhutan)

I would recommend Himalayan Hereos to anyone that is looking for an adventure on two wheels. The don't so much as offer vacations, as they offer life changing experiences. From the second that we put our deposit down on the website for our trip, Rex was in constant communication with us via email. He sent us FAQs, recommendations for insurance, and shoes, and every minuscule question we had, he always answered and never got frustrated because it was already written on the website. He called us on the phone when our trip itinerary had to change due to border closures, and we felt overly taken care of. We had a Himalayan Hereos representative traveling with us, and he was the most approachable fun loving human on the planet. We've already mentally signed up for two other adventures because this is one of the best times we've ever had in our lives.

Ant Willis, UK (2018 Nepal - Stairway to Heaven)

Was a wild ride! An unforgettable trip of a life time!
